SCANFLICK SETUP GUIDE
How to watch IPTV on a Windows PC or Mac
A desktop media player can open a compatible internet stream or playlist, but installing a player does not provide viewing access. You need setup details from your content provider and permission to use the content. Use every app in this guide only with authorized, licensed content.
These instructions focus on the desktop version of VLC and explain how to assess store alternatives. Menu labels can differ between Windows and macOS, player editions, and operating-system versions. Follow the platform-specific instructions rather than assuming every app has the same controls.

Check your Windows or macOS version first
Write down your operating-system version before choosing a player. Compare it with the requirements on the official download page or store listing. An app being listed does not establish that it will work with your particular computer or stream.
- On Windows, open Settings, select System, then About. Under Windows specifications, note the edition and version. Under Device specifications, check the system type if the download page offers different installers.
- On a Mac, open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner and select About This Mac. Note the macOS name and version. The window layout can vary, but those details are included.
- Check whether your operating system still receives security updates. If the computer is managed by a workplace or school, ask its administrator before installing software or changing security settings.
Install VLC from VideoLAN's official website
For the VLC desktop procedure below, start at https://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and choose the Windows or macOS download. Avoid download advertisements, repackaged installers, and browser extensions presented as necessary for playback.
- On Windows, open the downloaded VLC installer and follow its setup prompts. Only approve an installation permission request when it belongs to the installer you intentionally downloaded from VideoLAN.
- On a Mac, open the downloaded DMG disk image and drag the VLC application into Applications. Launch the installed copy from Applications and allow the normal verification process to finish.
- Open VLC before entering any setup details. For later VLC updates, return to VideoLAN's official download page rather than following an unexpected update advertisement.
Tip: ScanFlick is not affiliated with VLC or VideoLAN. Store availability can change, and store editions may differ from the desktop player described here.
Open a stream URL or remote M3U playlist in VLC
A network URL is the complete address the player retrieves. It may identify one stream or a remote M3U playlist. Use the address supplied for player setup, not a website's sign-in page. Treat the complete address as private because it can include access information.
- On Windows VLC desktop, open Media, then Open Network Stream. On Mac VLC desktop, open File, then Open Network. These labels apply to the VLC 3 desktop interface; another edition or release may look different.
- Paste the complete address into the network URL field. Check for accidental spaces at either end, missing characters, or line breaks introduced when copying it. Do not rewrite parts of the address.
- Select Play on Windows or Open on Mac. If a playlist loads rather than immediately playing, open the player's playlist view and select an entry. If it fails, note the error before trying another address.
Tip: Do not post your full stream URL, playlist, access tokens, or passwords in screenshots or public support messages.
Load a downloaded M3U playlist file
An M3U playlist describes media locations; it is not the video itself. VLC supports M3U playlists, but the referenced locations must still be reachable and compatible. A saved playlist therefore does not make internet streams available offline.
- Save the playlist file supplied by your authorized provider somewhere you can find it, such as Downloads. Do not substitute a playlist found through an unrelated search.
- In Windows VLC, choose Media, then Open File. On Mac VLC, choose File, then Open File. Select the M3U file and open it. Alternatively, drag the file from File Explorer or Finder into VLC.
- Use the playlist view to select an entry. If the file opens but an entry fails, distinguish that playback problem from a failure to import the playlist. Report which of those two stages failed.
Tip: Renaming an unrelated file to .m3u does not turn it into a working playlist. Ask the provider to confirm the correct setup format.
Evaluate Microsoft Store and Mac App Store alternatives
Official stores are the preferred starting point for alternatives. On Windows, browse Microsoft Store for media players. On Mac, open the App Store and search for players. Elmedia Video Player by Eltima LLC is currently listed in the Mac App Store and describes playlist management; that alone does not confirm support for your remote M3U address.
ScanFlick is not affiliated with Elmedia Video Player or other third-party players. Availability can change by region and device, including between the USA and Canada. A store listing is not a promise of compatibility.
- Open the listing and check the developer, supported operating-system version, privacy information, and whether the particular network-stream or playlist feature you need is documented.
- Read which features require a separate app purchase or subscription before installing. Player access and permission to view content are separate matters.
- Follow that app's own instructions for importing a URL or file. Do not assume its playlist controls match VLC. Use it only with authorized, licensed content.
Keep software current and test a wired connection
Complete software updates before troubleshooting playback so a pending restart is not overlooked. A wired test can help isolate a Wi-Fi problem, but it cannot repair an unavailable source or unsupported media format.
- On Windows 11, open Start, Settings, Windows Update and check for updates. Finish any requested restart. On Mac, open the Apple menu, System Settings, General, Software Update. Older macOS versions use different settings layouts; searching for Software Update is another route.
- Update store-installed players through their store. Microsoft currently directs users to Check for Updates in Microsoft Store; its location varies by Store version. On Mac, select Updates in the App Store sidebar and update the player.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from a router LAN port to the computer's Ethernet port, or use an adapter compatible with your computer and operating system. Seat both ends securely and test internet access. Try another cable if the connection fails.
Troubleshoot codecs, firewall prompts, and loading failures
Change one thing at a time and record the exact symptom. A blank playlist, an entry that will not open, and audio without a picture are different problems.
- Playlist will not load: recheck the original URL or file and ask the provider whether it is still valid and intended for this player. Do not attempt to bypass access restrictions or invent replacement addresses.
- Codec error or audio without video: a codec is software that decodes media. VLC includes support for many common codecs without extra codec packs. Update VLC from VideoLAN and note the named codec, if an error identifies one. Avoid installing an unknown codec bundle from a pop-up.
- Firewall prompt: verify that it names the installed player you intended to run. Keep the firewall enabled. On Windows, Windows Security, Firewall & network protection includes Allow an app through firewall for reviewing a genuinely blocked app. Do not broadly enable public-network access or open router ports just to test playback. Ask an administrator about managed computers.
Windows PC & Mac: common questions
Do I need an M3U file, or can I use a link?
VLC can open a network address or a saved M3U playlist. Use the format supplied for your setup. A link goes into the network URL field; a saved playlist is opened as a file.
Will another store player fix a codec problem?
Possibly, but it is not assured. Players have different decoding capabilities. Check the developer's documented formats and OS requirements first; changing apps will not fix an invalid or inaccessible source.
Should I disable my firewall if VLC will not connect?
No. Keep it enabled and check whether the player is actually blocked. Review a specific app exception only when needed, rather than weakening security for the whole computer.
What happens after I send a ScanFlick plan request?
The site takes no payment, and the team confirms requests manually on WhatsApp. After a request is confirmed, the team shares the setup details to use and can answer setup questions on WhatsApp.
